With a strong academic background in Mathematics, Actuarial Sciences and Data Analytics, Sukhjeevan Rana first experienced the Learning Support Centre (LSC) as a student, accessing study skills tuition and note-taking support throughout his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the University of Leicester. After gaining professional experience as a Temporary Actuarial Analyst in London, Sukhjeevan returned to LSC in December, first as a volunteer and now in an administrative role. He describes the opportunity to give back to the students and team that supported him as “rewarding and motivating,” bringing his organisational skills, attention to detail, and passion for student success to every task he undertakes.
How LSC Support Helped Me Succeed in University
I first started receiving support from LSC in 2018 while completing my Bachelor’s degree, and I continued to access support throughout my degree in Mathematics at De Montfort University and Master’s in Actuarial Science with Data Analytics at the University of Leicester. During that time, I benefited from study skills coaching and note-taking services, which were incredibly helpful.
The study skills support helped me structure my time, balance work and study, and stay on top of presentations, reports and group projects. The note-taking service was also amazing. Lectures moved quickly, but having detailed notes made it easier to review material, focus on understanding and not miss anything important.
Even during summer breaks or quieter periods, I found that continuing to use the support really helped me plan ahead and improve my skills year on year.
Transitioning from Student to LSC Staff: Professional Growth
After my studies, I worked in London as a Temporary Actuarial Analyst at Aviva. During that time, I received Access to Work support through LSC, which was really valuable as I transitioned into a professional setting.
In December, I returned to the Learning Support Centre – first as a volunteer and now I work in an administrative role. I love being part of the team. This role has allowed me to develop my engagement and communication skills, and I get to help students reach their goals in meaningful ways.
Behind the Scenes at LSC: What Students Might Not Realise
Having been both a student and a staff member, I can see just how much work happens behind the scenes at LSC. From tracking student engagement and managing timesheets, to supporting colleagues and keeping systems running smoothly, there’s a lot that goes into ensuring every student receives the support they need.
Sometimes students might think that staff aren’t responding straightaway, but there is a lot happening behind the scenes. Patience and understanding really help, and I always encourage students to make the most of the support available.
Top Advice for Students Using Learning Support Services
From my experience, I would say:
Why LSC Matters to Me
What makes LSC special, is its supportive culture. Of all our core values (inclusive, empowering, supportive, committed, professional, and holistic), I think supportive has influenced me the most, both as a learner and now as staff.
It’s inspiring to be part of a team that works together to help students achieve their goals. Even in an administrative role, I feel rewarded and motivated by the difference we make in students’ lives.
Looking Ahead
I’m passionate about helping students and ensuring they get the best support possible. Meeting targets and keeping everything running smoothly keeps me motivated, and I’m grateful to be part of this team again. Being here allows me to give back, apply my skills, and make sure every student has what they need to succeed.
