Alongside her numerous hobbies (ranging from an Amateur Dramatics Group to ceramic classes – and of course, spending time with her Pomchi – Marvin!) Debbie Everitt, one of our SpLD Study Skills Tutors, set aside time to share insights about her role at The Learning Support Centre.
Due to redundancy in 2006, I began to volunteer as a mentor in a local school. I believe that it was this experience that made me want to jump into the educational sector to assist those who need support at university. This gave me confidence and personal fulfilment to help others in whatever way I possibly can to realise their potential and achieve their academic/career goals. I began working with LSC back in 2007 as a notetaker and a mentor. Following lots of training and completing my Open University Masters in Difficulties in Literacy, I became a Study Skills Tutor in 2014 and have been enjoying all these roles ever since.
LSC has always been supportive to all staff and, from the offset, I knew that I was part of a team of like-minded individuals who all strive to provide the best guidance and support. I have made friendships for life and know that there is someone there to listen to no matter what life challenges you with. We are a team, with a strong focus of care, not only for our students but for each other too.
To be understanding and empathetic with all situations that students could be facing, and always to be grounded and non-judgmental. Also, be organised and adaptable wherever possible to fit in with demands and be positively reactive so that all students feel safe and confident talking and expressing themselves freely. Enjoy every moment knowing that you are assisting someone to fulfil their dreams and goals. Be flexible, approachable, and consistent with boundaries but most of all… be yourself as that’s how to get the best out of people! You will meet some incredible people along the way who will appreciate your time and support, and no two days will ever be the same!
Watching my students grow, not only in academic endeavours but also on their personal journeys. After spending several years, especially with those students who I have had the pleasure of working with from undergrad to postgrad level, it is fulfilling to see achievements and growth, not to mention when students stay in touch to let me know how their chosen careers are going. I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with some incredible people, whom I greatly admire for overcoming adversities and challenges to achieve their goals.
