If you are experiencing a mental health or well-being crisis and are in immediate risk of harming yourself or someone else (for example, if you’ve made a plan and are worried that you may act on it soon), telephone 999 immediately and ask for assistance. An ambulance will be able to bring you directly to the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department of your local hospital to get urgent help.    

If you are on campus or live on campus at Aston University and require urgent support, please telephone Campus Safety on 0121 359 2922.   

You may find these additional resources useful if you feel distressed and need urgent support, but are not immediately worried about the need to keep yourself safe:

A partnership of organisations that have come together to support children, young people and families in Birmingham, under the age of 25.  

·     The Samaritans (Telephone: 116 123) 

The Samaritans offer a safe place for you to talk any time you like about whatever’s getting to you. They can help you explore your options, understand your problems better, or they can just be there to listen. You can call the Samaritans 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You don’t have to be suicidal to call.  

·     HOPELINE UK (Telephone: +44 (0)800 068 4141 or SMS Text: +44 (0)7786 209697) 

Thefree HOPELINE UK service is similar to the Samaritans but specifically for people under 35 who are feeling suicidal. They will also give advice if you are worried about someone else with suicidal thoughts. Open 9am to 10pm on weekdays, 2pm to 10pm on weekends and bank holidays.

Their helpline is for people in the UK who are down or have hit a wall for any reason, who need to talk or find information and support. They’re open 5pm to midnight, 365 days a year.

  • Umbrella (Telephone: 0121 237 5700) 

Providing free, accessible and confidential sexual health services in Birmingham and Solihull, including all types of contraception, and STI testing and treatment. They also provide specialist support for victims of rape and sexual violence. Their service is non-judgemental and for people of all ages, genders and orientations – and delivered by University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust in partnership with other organisations and providers across the region. Everyone is welcome, and you don’t need to see a GP first.
